1. The Statue of Liberty

One of the most popular tourist attractions is the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. The statue was a gift to the people of the United States, from the people of France and symbolizes universal democracy and freedom. In 1965 it named part of the National Park System, while in 1990 it became a national museum of immigration.

2. Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883 and was at the time the first bridge that crossed the East River and the longest suspension bridge in the world. Measuring 1,134 miles, the bridge is used by more than 120,000 cars, 3,100 cyclists, and 4,000 pedestrians per day. For both locals and tourists the Brooklyn Bridge offers a breathtaking view of lower Manhattan, Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty.

3. Chrysler Building

Among a multitude of skyscrapers, the Chrysler building, with its shimmering peak, is one of the most eye popping structures. The windows in the crown of the building are lined with lights, making for a spectacular night time effect. Standing 1046 feet tall, building work commenced in 1928 and was completed in 1930, with an average of four floors per week. Despite the building’s dizzying height, and limited security measures, there were no fatalities among construction workers.

4. Empire State Building

The Empire State building is the tallest structure in New York. Counting 103 floors, the building took eleven months to build and was completed in 1931. In 1945, fourteen people lost their lives when a plane flew into the 79th floor during heavy fog. The 103rd floor was once planned as a landing point for zeppelins. Tourists can be whisked up to the 86th floor and gaze at the city from a glass enclosed pavilion, or travel to the 102nd floor and enjoy the view from an open air deck.

5. Apollo Theater

Step back in time when visiting the Apollo theater. Since its opening, the theater has been home to Elle Fitzgerald, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Tracy Morgan, Azis Ansari, Jim Gaffigan, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.
